BCC Receives Grant to Address College Campus Hunger

PITTSFIELD, Mass. — Berkshire Community College (BCC), in partnership with Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts (MCLA), has been awarded a multi-year Community College Campus Hunger Program Grant in the amount of $180,000.    Funded through the American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA) and administered through the Massachusetts Department of Higher Education, the grant award will provide program support through June 30, 2024.    The grant is designed to increase access to academic opportunities for students of color and students experiencing food insecurity. Over $30,000 Drug Seizure in Pittsfield Leads to Trafficking Charges

PITTSFIELD, Mass. — A search warrant was executed on Jan. 10 at 29 Alden Ave in Pittsfield by the Pittsfield Police and State Police resulting in the arrest of Alan J. Ramos. 

Upon execution of the search warrant, the Pittsfield Police and State Police Berkshire County Detective Unit seized 90 grams of methamphetamine, 45 grams of heroin, and 30 grams of cocaine amounting to approximately $31,500 street value of illegal narcotics and over $6,000 in cash at the residence.

Ramos was arraigned in Central Berkshire District Court on drug trafficking charges. District Attorney Shugrue led the arraignment. Heather Valentine will be prosecuting the case for the Commonwealth.

Pittsfield Council Tackles 14 Items in Just Over an Hour

PITTSFIELD, Mass. — The City Council went through 14 petitions in just over an hour on Tuesday.

These included retiree cost-of-living adjustments from 3 percent to a maximum of 5 percent, a deed of lieu of foreclosure for three properties on Robbins Avenue, and a couple of referrals.

By approving the COLA order, the council accepted Chapter 269 of the Acts of 2022,
"An Act Relative to Cost-of-Living Adjustments for Retirees," which was signed into law by former Gov. Charlie Baker in November.

This allows for an increase in the fiscal year 2023 COLA on the base amount of a retiree's pension of $16,000. The board of the Pittsfield Contributory Retirement System voted in

Green Dalton Committee Waiting on Town Hall Roof Study

DALTON, Mass. — Town Manager Tom Hutcheson informed the Green Dalton Committee last Wednesday that Hill Engineering confused the Town Hall/Library project with another project that had been put on hold.    It is unclear how the engineering company got that idea but Building Grounds Superintendent Patrick Pettit informed them to resume working on the project, Hutcheson said.    Hill Engineering is working on two roof studies for the town. One is for the library to see if the roof can be insulated and the other is for Town Hall to see if the roof structure can support solar panels.    The solar panel project was postponed until March 13 so that Hill

BRPC to Receive $50K National Endowment for the Arts Grant

PITTSFIELD, Mass. — Berkshire Regional Planning Commission (BRPC) announced it has been approved by the National Endowment for the Arts (NEA) to receive a Grants for Arts Projects award of $50,000.    This grant will support the Creative Compact for Collaborative and Collective Impact (C4) Initiative. Pittsfield Council Rejects Petition Against Magnesium Chloride

Ward 2 Councilor Charles Kronick takes to the mic to read a letter from a former MassDOT employee backing his position about the roads. 

PITTSFIELD, Mass. — The City Council on Tuesday shot down Ward 2 Councilor Charles Kronick's attempt to block possible purchases of magnesium chloride in response to the poor road conditions during the pre-Christmas storm. 

Kronick said there were two major mistakes made in the city's response to Storm Elliot: not pre-treating the roads with rock salt and not putting out an emergency alert about the situation.

BCC to Hold Alumni Appreciation Day on Jan. 12

PITTSFIELD, Mass. — Berkshire Community College (BCC) invites all alumni to the annual Alumni Appreciation Day on Friday, Jan. 12.

The event includes two creative workshops, held in the College's newest student spaces, followed by a buffet dinner in the Connector. 

Maker Space Demo and Hands-on Activity: 4–5 pm and 5–6 pm in the newly created Berkshire Science Commons. Colin Wilson, Director of Berkshire Science Commons, and Eric Drury, Instructional Program Manager: Making, Manufacturing and Technology, will lead a tour and demonstration of the creative technological tools featured in the Maker Space, including Prusa 3D printers and a Glowforge laser cutter.
