Wahconah Park Restoration Committee Hears Timeline from OPM

PITTSFIELD, Mass. — The city has hired an owner's project manager (OPM) that envisions the new Wahconah Park being ready for use by the summer of 2025.    

On Monday the Wahconah Park Restoration Committee had its first public meeting with Skanska USA, who was hired out of three responses to a request for services issued in the fall. 

John Benzinger, Dale Caldwell, and Craig Spice of the firm laid out the path forward for the foundational work of the project. Skanska was also the OPM for the $120 million rebuild of Taconic High School. 

The OPM acts on behalf of the owner in the planning, design, construction, commissioning, and closeout

MCLA to Offer National Girls and Women in Sports Day Clinics

NORTH ADAMS, Mass. –- The Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts' Athletic Department will host two events on Feb. 4 to celebrate National Girls and Women in Sports Day – an initiative that dates back to 1987 to encourage the participation of girls and women in sports. Clinic registration is open until Jan. 29.     The day will include a pickleball clinic and tournament for women from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Amsler Campus Center gymnasium and a sports clinic for girls in grades 3-8 from 12 to 4 at the gym.   The sports clinic for girls will offer instruction in softball, basketball, soccer, lacrosse and volleyball.   Advanced registration and payment

Pittsfield Search Warrant Leads To Firearms, Drug Recovery

PITTSFIELD, Mass. — According to the District Attorney's Office, on Jan. 8 a search warrant was executed in Pittsfield by the Berkshire County Law Enforcement Task Force, and Following the search, five individuals were arrested for items found during the search.    The following was recovered:   two loaded firearms: one with a defaced serial number and one with a large capacity feeding device; quantities of cocaine packaged for distribution; quantities of heroin packaged for distribution; and distribution indicators such as a functioning digital scale, unused wax bags, and various quantities of U.S. Currency.     The defendants currently face various

OLLI Instructors Preview Winter Semester Classes of All Interests

PITTSFIELD, Mass. — The Osher Lifelong Learning Institute (OLLI) at Berkshire Community College offers over 20 classes in science, history, social studies, literature, and the arts.

The membership organization held a virtual open house for its 2023 winter semester last week, with fifteen instructors giving an overview of their courses to potential students.

Pittsfield Expands Online Permitting for Various Licenses

BCC and BRPC Offer Free 'Choke Saver' Training Certification

PITTSFIELD, Mass. —Berkshire Community College (BCC) and Berkshire Regional Planning Commission (BRPC) will offer a free Choke Saver Training class offered on various dates in several locations throughout Berkshire County.     The 75-minute class provides participants with a two-year certification.    Local businesses, such as restaurants, that are required to have Choke Safe certified individuals on site are particularly encouraged to participate. BRTA's Fare Free Month Well Received by Community

PITTSFIELD, Mass. — During a time of inflationary costs of living, the Berkshire Regional Transit Authority boosted its December ridership by 20,000 with a free fare event.

Funded by a state grant, bus and paratransit services were of no cost from Nov. 25 to Dec. 31. This led to nearly 54,000 riders throughout the month, compared to last year's December ridership of around 34,000.

This was just below BRTA's goal of 55,000 riders but Administrator Robert Malnati is still happy with the result, as it allowed more people to use the transit authority’s services or discover them for the first time.

County Retirement Board Votes 5% Staff COLA

PITTSFIELD, Mass. — Berkshire County Retirement Board voted to set the cost-of-living adjustments at a 5 percent increase during its meeting on Wednesday morning.    The Berkshire County Retirement System conducted a salary survey that recommended a COLA of 7.1 percent.    The COLA policy that the board previously approved was calculated between 2.5 to 5 percent but the board has the discretion to approve above that calculation in certain circumstances, Executive Director Sheila LaBarbera said.   Staff looked into comparable positions for retirement coordinator in Western Mass, including Lowell and Lawrence because they are the two most economically depressed

Dalton Historical Commission Updated on Town Hall Renovation Plans

Pittsfield Firefighters Extinguish North St. Fire

PITTSFIELD, Mass.  Firefighters extinguished a Sunday morning structure fire caused by the careless disposal of smoking materials.   Sunday, Jan. 8,  at 7:30 am the Pittsfield Fire Department responded to 1223 North Street, a two-family apartment building, for a possible structure fire.   The 911 call was made by a good samaritan who saw smoke emanating from the building's roof line. The samaritan knocked on the doors and alerted the occupants of the blaze.   E3, E5, E2, Tower-1, and Car2 responded. State Announces Nearly $2M in Fire Education Grants

STOW — The Baker-Polito Administration today announced that 266 municipal fire departments will receive $1.9 million in grants to fund fire and life safety education for children and older adults, setting a new record for the Student Awareness of Fire Education (S.A.F.E.) and Senior SAFE programs.
