CHESHIRE, Mass. — The two-time state champion Hoosac Valley girls basketball team is sending a dual message with the video it created for social media this month.   Like a lot of basketball teams, the Hurricanes have caught the craze of posting a video montage of players who cannot gather in one place but can virtually unite as a ball is passed from outside the frame to each team member and then relayed to the next, who catches and passes in their own backyard or driveway.   The videos are a fun take on the concepts of social distancing and staying connected during the COVID-19 pandemic.   Hoosac Valley coach Ron Wojcik decided to put a different spin on

CHESHIRE, Mass. — Xander Bogaerts will have a chance to lead his team back to the playoffs.

Aaron Judge will continue his assault on the home-run record book.   There will be a baseball season in 2020. And it will open sometime in early April.   At least in Cheshire it will.   For more than four decades, the World Baseball League has used Strat-O-Matic Baseball to bring the game home for brothers Jeff and Matt Chaput and a group of friends who have tested their baseball IQs against one another and fate to see who is the best at managing a virtual team of very real Major Leaguers.   Strat-O-Matic, which began in 1961, combines the statistics of current players with

The Hoosac Valley girls basketball team was going hard in practice.   Then, it got some hard news.   “I think it was Averie [McGrath]’s dad who came in and told us,” Ron Wojcik said. “We read the announcement to everyone. It was pretty weird at that point. Surreal was the word that came to mind.”   Surreal, but not wholly unexpected.   Late Thursday afternoon, the Massachusetts Interscholastic Athletic Association announced that all of this weekend's state championship games in basketball and hockey are canceled due to concerns about COVID-19.   That means that Wojcik’s Hurricanes and the boys and girls basketball teams from

NORTH ADAMS, Mass. -- William Peets has been a shot-blocking machine for the BArT basketball team over the years.   But it was a block of a different kind that proved costly for the Wolfpack in Thursday's River Valley Athletic League title game.   Peets left the game less than a minute into the third quarter after hitting the floor attempting to take a charge.   After icing his knee on the bench, returned later in the third quarter, but he wasn't 100 percent, and Eagle Hill was able to pull away in the closing moments for a 51-44 win at the Armory.   Peets finished with five points, six rebounds and seven blocks for BArT, which got a team-high 17 from Isaac
