BECKET, Mass. — Summer camps took a significant hit during the past year and the Massachusetts delegation has stepped up to support them as they welcome back eager campers.   State Senator Adam Hinds visited the Becket-Chimney Corners YMCA Friday with a giant check for $3,000,000 in hand for summer camps across the state - including $700,000 for camps in the Berkshire, Hampshire, Franklin, and Hampden districts.   "This has been a rough year, as we all know. A year and a half with basically camps going more than a year without income, and we know very well that in Western Mass and in the Berkshires, especially, that camps play such a critical role for so many

PITTSFIELD, Mass. -- Coaches always tell players to practice like they play.   B.J. Jefferson is glad things did not work out quite that way.   "The last practice we had, 10 players in a row missed the bunt," Jefferson said after the Pittsfield Little League American Division 10-year-old All-Stars defeated Holden, 10-0, in five innings on Friday.   "Couldn't get a bunt down to safe our life. And all of a sudden ... thank God they're game players and not practice players."   Bunts were critical to the Americans in opening the double-elimination Section 1 tournament with a victory at Deming Park.   In the second inning, Jacob Welch and

PITTSFIELD, Mass. — The Berkshire County Historical Society will celebrate Herman Melville's birthday Aug. 1 with a hike on Monument Mountain in Great Barrington at 9 am.    The hike takes approximately 2 ½ hours and is appropriate for families. Hikers should meet at the Monument Mountain Reservation Parking lot on Route 7 and should be prepared with their own water, proper footwear, hiking gear and bug repellent.   The hike commemorates the Aug. 5, 1850, first meeting of Melville and Nathaniel Hawthorne. At the time, Melville was working on his greatest novel, Moby-Dick, while Hawthorne was a literary sensation having just published The Scarlett Letter. The

GREAT BARRINGTON, Mass. -- The Great Barrington All-Stars were able to crack the door open, but Christian Barry was there to shut it tight.   Barry retired three straight to stop a sixth-inning rally and preserve a 6-2 win for the Pittsfield Little League American Division 12-year-olds in Thursday’s Don Gleason District 1 title game.   Barry ended the game with his second strikeout in 1-⅔ innings of relief work to make a winner of Sebastian Herrera and send the Pittsfield Americans into next week’s sectional playoffs on the road to Williamsport, Pa.   Great Barrington registered its only three hits of the game back-to-back-to-back with its back to the wall
