LENOX, Mass. -- Hundreds of amateur athletes Sunday won the 46th Josh Billings Runaground Triathlon where, as the motto goes, "To finish is to win."   The day's fastest finishers featured familiar names as the four-man team from Allen Heights Veterinary was the first across the finish line at Camp Mah-Kee-Nac, which took over this year from Tanglewood as the triathlon terminus.   As usual, teams headed out from downtown Great Barrington for a 27-mile bike ride to the boat launch at the Stockbridge Bowl, where pedalers gave way to paddlers for a 5-mile spring around the lake. The final leg of the event is a 6-mile run.   Athletes compete in teams of two, three or

PITTSFIELD, Mass. – Backlit by the first glow of sunlight over the hills east of the city and sporting a T-shirt with the slogan “Women run the world,” Shiobbean Lemme calls the predawn hours “the best time of the day.”   “To get this view, you have to go to bed before Jeopardy is over,” Lemme jokes. “I don’t ever get to see Final Jeopardy. But, you know, the tradeoff is worth it for me.”   On Friday, Lemme was joined by more joggers than usual as the Berkshire County running community joined runners throughout the nation in honoring Memphis, Tenn.’s, Eliza Fletcher, who was kidnapped and murdered during her early

GLEN ALLEN, Va. — Pittsfield's quest to bring a Babe Ruth World Series title back to the Berkshires came up just a bit short on Friday.   But it will be a long time before anyone forgets what this team accomplished.   Kado, Hawaii, played error-free ball in the field and manufactured just enough offense at the plate to earn a 5-1 victory at Glen Allen Stadium.   "It's been big," Morris Fried said after being named Pittsfield's MVP in the title game. "We've been working hard all summer, and to get this far — I'm really proud of these guys. We worked as a team. It's not just one person who got us here.   "It's

GLEN ALLEN, Va. — Connor Paronto was in the zone on Thursday night at Glen Allen Stadium.    The Pittsfield Babe Ruth 13-year-old All-Star allowed just three hits in a complete-game, 6-1 win over Fargo, N.D., in the semi-finals of the World Series.    Pittsfield earned a place in Friday afternoon's Championship Game against the Pacific Southwest Regional Champs from Hawaii, a winner over Williamsport, Pa., on Thursday.    Jackson Almeida and Morris Fried each doubled, and John John Mullen had a big two-run hit late as Pittsfield scored three times in the bottom of the sixth to take a 6-0 lead.    Paronto struck out just three

HENRICO, Va. — On Thursday night, the Pittsfield Babe Ruth 13-year-old All-Stars will get down to business.   On Wednesday afternoon, the mood was light as the squad held what is sure to be its last full practice of the season.   They kidded one another about their shoes, they reminisced about past games and past tournaments, someone came up with the notion of reviving old Little League dugout chants for Thursday's World Series semi-final, but that idea did not get much traction.   They were, for perhaps the last time in this current incarnation, the tight-knit sports family that has pulled together to achieve great heights in a game devotees call "the ultimate

HENRICO, Va. — Robert Gyurjan says he is fortunate.   And he is … if good fortune means driving 500 miles from home and paying for a hotel room where you can work late into the night on a computer keyboard.   "i'm lucky enough that I can work remotely," Gyurjan said while watching his son Sam and his teammates practice on the baseball field at Hermitage High School outside of Richmond. "i brought two monitors and a laptop, and once the day's activities are done, I log on and I work at night to keep up with everything."   Robert Gyurjan is part of a large group of parents and other family members who made the trip to the Old Dominion

GLEN ALLEN, Va. — Cam Hillard hit a two-run, go-ahead single in the top of the fourth and split time with Connor Paronto in a 7-4 win for the Pittsfield Babe Ruth 13-year-old All-Stars on Tuesday afternoon.   With the win over the Pacific Northwest Champions from Wilamette Valley, Ore., Pittsfield finished pool play with a record of 3-1 and grabbed the top seed out of the tournament's five-team National Division.   That means a day off when bracket play begins on Wednesday and a bye into Thursday's championship semi-final.   One day after being no-hit in its only loss of the all-star season, Pittfsfield responded with nine hits on Tuesday, including a double by
