McCALL, Idaho — Pittsfield's Allan Bates placed 33rd on Saturday in the 10-kilometer race at the 2023 U.S. National Snowshoe Championship.   Bates, 74, covered the course in 1 hour, 4 minutes, 53 seconds, the best time in his age group and in the middle of a 53-racer pack.   The event was won by 39-year-old Gary Joseph of Colorado Springs, Colo., who finished in 40:59.   Bates was one of two New Englanders in the field.   Readsboro, Vt.'s, Denise Dion, 64, finished in 1:41:43, placing her sixth in the 60-69 age group.

PITTSFIELD, Mass. -- Registration for Pittsfield Little League is now open for the Majors division, ages 9 to 12, and the Triple A division, ages 7 and 8.   Tryouts for the Majors division will be either the last weekend in March or the first weekend in April.   Players who are not selected for the Majors division will be assigned to teams in the Triple A division.   The league is open to girls and boys who reside in Pittsfield, Lenox, Lanesboro and a small area of Richmond.   The fee to play is $75. BOSTON — Through the month of December 2022, the majority of the state experienced drought improvements and Berkshire County has remained at level 0: normal conditions.   This is not the case for the rest of the state.   Secretary Rebecca Tepper announced the following drought declarations: the Islands Region will remain at a Level 2-Significant Drought, the Northeast and Cape Cod Regions have been upgraded to a Level 1-Mild Drought, and the Connecticut River Valley Region will join the Western, Central, and Southeast Regions at Level 0-Normal Conditions. Robert Ireland, in this image from Imperial Bowl, retired and closed the candlepin alley in November after running the lanes for 45 years.  PITTSFIELD, Mass. — When one door closes another one opens as the saying goes, and this is the case for Pittsfield's last candlepin bowling alley, Imperial Bowl.   Robert Ireland took over what was Imperial Lanes on Lyman Street around 1970 after returning home from Vietnam.    Ireland and his business partner, Zigmund Wojtkowski, were always serious about candlepin bowling — a New England version using smaller balls and narrow pins — and wanted to further the sport by getting involved in associations.

PITTSFIELD, Mass. — The Pittsfield Recreation Program has once again teamed up with the Boys & Girls Club of the Berkshires for a free public skating opportunity.   The first 100 people in attendance will receive both free admission for skating and skate rental, if needed (limited size availability), on the following dates: 3-4:30 p.m. Jan. 14, 21, and Feb. 18. PITTSFIELD, Mass. — The city has hired an owner's project manager (OPM) that envisions the new Wahconah Park being ready for use by the summer of 2025.    

On Monday the Wahconah Park Restoration Committee had its first public meeting with Skanska USA, who was hired out of three responses to a request for services issued in the fall. 

John Benzinger, Dale Caldwell, and Craig Spice of the firm laid out the path forward for the foundational work of the project. Skanska was also the OPM for the $120 million rebuild of Taconic High School. 

The OPM acts on behalf of the owner in the planning, design, construction, commissioning, and closeout

NORTH ADAMS, Mass. –- The Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts' Athletic Department will host two events on Feb. 4 to celebrate National Girls and Women in Sports Day – an initiative that dates back to 1987 to encourage the participation of girls and women in sports. Clinic registration is open until Jan. 29.     The day will include a pickleball clinic and tournament for women from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Amsler Campus Center gymnasium and a sports clinic for girls in grades 3-8 from 12 to 4 at the gym.   The sports clinic for girls will offer instruction in softball, basketball, soccer, lacrosse and volleyball.   Advanced registration and payment

MONTPELIER, Vt. — The Vermont Fish and Wildlife Department is reminding the public to take precautions around wild birds, as highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) continues to circulate in the state.   Backyard flocks of domestic birds in Caledonia and Lamoille Counties have had to be destroyed after exposure to the virus, commonly known as avian flu.   "Highly pathogenic avian influenza has been detected in more than 70 wild birds since March, with cases reported most months and in every region of the state," said Wildlife Program Manager David Sausville.  "Many exposures come from migrating birds, so we expect case numbers to drop as winter

It was a year filled with the usual complement of team and individual glory, but one Berkshire County squad went where none of its peers have gone before: to the top of the heap in high school lacrosse.   That was enough of a milestone to give the Wahconah boys lax team the nod as the story of the year in Berkshire County athletics.   It was an accomplishment several years in the making as Wahconah worked its way through the post-season — a one-goal loss in the Central/Western Mass quarterfinals in 2019, a Central/Western Mass title in 2021, the next year the tournament was held.   But in the 10th year of the program's existence – just a decade after the
