Berkshire DA's Office Receives $100K for Youth, Police Programs

PITTSFIELD, Mass. — The Berkshire District Attorney's Office has received a nearly $100,000 federal grant for youth community engagement and law enforcement suppression.

"The idea of this particular program is to reengage community and also to outreach with our law enforcement agencies," District Attorney Timothy Shugrue said during a press conference on Thursday.

"As you know, when I ran for office, one of the things I said I wanted to do was reinvest in the community, that was that pledge, and also to form a stronger partnership with law enforcement, which we've been continuing to do for the last seven months. This grant is going to support our pledge to

Third Mosquito in Pittsfield Tests Positive for West Nile Virus

PITTSFIELD, Mass. — The Massachusetts Department of Public Health confirmed a third positive result of West Nile Virus (WNV) in weekly samples of mosquitoes collected by the Berkshire County Mosquito Control Project in the City of Pittsfield.   The sample was taken in the vicinity of Allendale (Cheshire Road).   According to the Massachusetts Department of Public Health's WNV Risk Map, Pittsfield's WNV Risk level has now elevated to moderate. This means "infection with WNV is likely or has occurred" in humans. It is important to note that at the time of this release, we have no confirmed human cases of WNV but encourage residents to take the following

PITTSFIELD, Mass. — The following road work is planned to take place starting Monday, Aug. 14: Monday, Aug. 14: Paving Quirico Drive, Lucia Drive, Almar Drive Tuesday, Aug. 15: Paving Brookside Drive & Ann Drive Wednesday, Aug. 16: Curbing install Cloverdale Street Thursday, Aug. 17 & Friday, Aug.  18: Milling California Avenue, Maryland Avenue, Allendale Road & Lakeway Drive. Curbing will be installed on Brookside Drive. In addition, between Aug.  14-18, structures will be raised on Tamarack Road, Cloverdale Street, Quirico Drive and Lucia Drive.   This work will occur between the hours of 7 a.m. and 5 p.m. and is subject to change based on weather

Harrington Competes at World Championships

GLASGOW, Scotland – Pittsfield’s Kellie Harrington Thursday finished 24th in the junior cross country Olympic race at the UCI Cycling World Championships.   Harrington finished 7 minutes, 38 seconds behind the champion, Canada’s Isabella Holmgren, and in the top half of the field among 56 athletes from around the world.   Holmgren completed the race in 1:07:37, to finish 39 seconds ahead of runner-up Marin Lowe, also of Canada.   Harrington finished 21 seconds behind her Team USA teammate, Vida Lopez de San Roman in 23rd place.   The fastest American in the field was Andie Aagard, who placed eighth in 1:10:37.   Both Aagard and Lopez de San Roman

Pittsfield's Preliminary Ballot Positions Drawn for Mayor, Two Wards

PITTSFIELD, Mass. — Preliminary election ballot positions were drawn on Thursday for the mayoral race and two wards.

"We just want to welcome and congratulate all of you on your nomination for elected office," Assistant Clerk Heather Brazeau said to a small audience in council chambers.

The city will hold a preliminary election on Sept. 19 to trim the candidate fields for mayor, Ward 2 and Ward 7 to two candidates each.

Peter Marchetti and Karen Kalinowsky, both incumbent councilors, and John Krol, a former councilor, are running to replace Mayor Linda Tyer. Krol and Kalinowsky were in attendance to

Lanesborough Board Mulling 'Residents Only' Sign at Beach

Lally Beach lies at the end of a narrow residential street. 

LANESBOROUGH, Mass. — A town resident wants signage at the public beach to encourage more orderly usage. 

Michael Lally, who resides on Sunrise Street, said he has taken care of the Pontoosuc Lake beach for years and wants to know why the sign stipulating that it is for town residents only is no more.

The Lanesborough Lally Public Beach is located at the end of Sunrise Street and he's calling for "residents only," "closes at dusk" and "no smoking" signage.

From Lally's observation, about 80 percent of beachgoers are not from Lanesborough.
