Berkshire United Way Donates School Supplies for 14 Schools By Sabrina Damms, iBerkshires Staff

 PITTSFIELD, Mass.—Berkshire United Way has partnered with community members and local organizations to donate school supplies to 14 schools across the county. For the last few days Berkshire United Way and its partners, Greylock Federal Credit Union, Lenco Armored Vehicles, and Kiwanis Club of South County, have been dropping the supplies off at the schools. Director of Volunteer Engagement Brenda Petell said the cost of going back to school is expensive. From school clothes to haircuts, to materials, the cost adds up and is burdensome for some families, she said. BOSTON — The Massachusetts Department of Transportation (MassDOT), through its Safe Routes to School (SRTS) Program, announced the launch of the 2023-2024 Signs and Lines Program and Infrastructure Funding Program grant opportunities. Both programs seek to provide funding though a competitive application process to help facilitate the development of construction projects in areas immediately surrounding public elementary, middle, and high schools throughout the Commonwealth. The application period opened for both grant opportunities on Aug. 23.  PITTSFIELD, Mass.— During the final West Street/Holmes Road Changes community forum, residents agreed to make the roads on the west side safer changes need to be made. However, by the end of the two-hour-plus meeting on Wednesday, there was no consensus among residents on how to best accomplish this. The proposed designs cover the stretch of road on Holmes Road between Williams Street and Elm Street and West Street from the intersection of Government Drive and College Way to Valentine Road. PITTSFIELD, Mass. — The City of Pittsfield launched the latest version of the online permitting program, PermitEyes with the release of PermitEyes 20/20. PermitEyes 20/20 is a modular, cloud-based system which allows municipalities to electronically receive applications, collect electronic payments, track inspections, and issue permits. Beginning on Monday, Sept. 11, the new version of PermitEyes will be live for the Health Department. Other city departments that use this software will be receiving the updated version later this year.  PITTSFIELD, Mass. — Candidates in the preliminary election will pitch their ideas during live debates hosted by Pittsfield Community Television in partnership with iBerkshires on Tuesday.
Debates will be held on Sept. 5 at the Berkshire Athenaeum beginning at 5 p.m. with Ward 2 followed by Ward 7 at 6 p.m. and the mayoral debate at 7 p.m.
These races will be trimmed on Sept. 19 in preparation for the general election on Nov. 7.
The mayoral debate will feature Peter Marchetti, John Krol, and Karen Kalinowsky. The three are running to replace Mayor Linda Tyer, who is not seeking re-election.
Krol is a former city councilor and Marchetti and Kalinowsky are current city

PITTSFIELD, Mass. — The city of Pittsfield's Department of Public Utilities announced flushing of the city's water system will begin Tuesday, Sept. 5. Water mains throughout the city will be flushed through hydrants over the course of four weeks to remove accumulations of pipeline corrosion products.  PITTSFIELD, Mass. — The city marked National Overdose Awareness Day with a standout and a candlelit vigil. In 2022, there were 48 fatal overdoses in Berkshire County— 29 just in Pittsfield. Since 2012, there has been a staggering 418 deaths from overdose in the county. Each person lost was represented in Park Square with a sign that a candle was placed in front of.  PITTSFIELD, Mass. — As the last animal of Eleanor Sonsini Animal Shelter, Knight is living more like a king.
The under-2-year-old American pit bull mix has the whole shelter as his palace but longs for a forever home. He has been all over social media and done plenty of meet-and-greets but has yet to find the perfect match.
Shelter Manager Noelle Howland is going to ensure that Knight's story ends well. Though the shelter closed to the public on Friday, she will stay there with the pup until he finds an adopter.

 CHESHIRE, Mass. — The McCann Tech cross country team on Sept. 16 will host a 5-kilometer trail run and 1 mile walk to benefit victims of August's fire in Hawaii. The Walk/Run for Maui fund-raiser will take place at Whitney's Farm on Ingalls Road (follow the dirt road past the U-Pick blueberries). Check in on Saturday, Sept. 16, will be at 7:30 a.m. The 5K trail run begins at 8:30, and the stroller-friendly 1 mile walk begins at 9:30.
