Forthill Farms Receives $90K Grant

BOSTON — The Healey-Driscoll Administration announced awards of $710,140 in APR Improvement Program (AIP) funding to nine farms across Massachusetts including $90,000 for Forthill Farms in Pittsfield.    Forthill Farm will expand their existing farmstand building, increasing their operational efficiency by creating additional space for retail sales, washing and packaging produce, and storage.   The Massachusetts Department of Agricultural Resources’ (MDAR) grants provide business planning, technical assistance, and funds to commercial farms with land that has already been protected through MDAR’s Agricultural Preservation Restriction (APR) Program to help

Berkshire DA's Office Receives $100K for Youth, Police Programs

PITTSFIELD, Mass. — The Berkshire District Attorney's Office has received a nearly $100,000 federal grant for youth community engagement and law enforcement suppression.

"The idea of this particular program is to reengage community and also to outreach with our law enforcement agencies," District Attorney Timothy Shugrue said during a press conference on Thursday.

Third Mosquito in Pittsfield Tests Positive for West Nile Virus

PITTSFIELD, Mass. — The Massachusetts Department of Public Health confirmed a third positive result of West Nile Virus (WNV) in weekly samples of mosquitoes collected by the Berkshire County Mosquito Control Project in the City of Pittsfield.   The sample was taken in the vicinity of Allendale (Cheshire Road).   According to the Massachusetts Department of Public Health's WNV Risk Map, Pittsfield's WNV Risk level has now elevated to moderate. This means "infection with WNV is likely or has occurred" in humans. It is important to note that at the time of this release, we have no confirmed human cases of WNV but encourage residents to take the following

Harrington Competes at World Championships

GLASGOW, Scotland – Pittsfield’s Kellie Harrington Thursday finished 24th in the junior cross country Olympic race at the UCI Cycling World Championships.   Harrington finished 7 minutes, 38 seconds behind the champion, Canada’s Isabella Holmgren, and in the top half of the field among 56 athletes from around the world.   Holmgren completed the race in 1:07:37, to finish 39 seconds ahead of runner-up Marin Lowe, also of Canada.   Harrington finished 21 seconds behind her Team USA teammate, Vida Lopez de San Roman in 23rd place.   The fastest American in the field was Andie Aagard, who placed eighth in 1:10:37.   Both Aagard and Lopez de San Roman

PITTSFIELD, Mass. — Preliminary election ballot positions were drawn on Thursday for the mayoral race and two wards.

"We just want to welcome and congratulate all of you on your nomination for elected office," Assistant Clerk Heather Brazeau said to a small audience in council chambers.

The city will hold a preliminary election on Sept. 19 to trim the candidate fields for mayor, Ward 2 and Ward 7 to two candidates each.
