DALTON, Mass. — A residence located at 96 Anthony Road is facing condemnation unless the resident can make strides in cleaning the property to meet safety standards. Despite having concerns, the Board of Health this week agreed to give Gary Dill an additional four weeks to clean the property. The board previously approved a deadline of Aug. 14 to clean the kitchen, clear the egresses in all rooms, remove debris, repair the front stairs, and install smoke and carbon monoxide detectors, Health Agent Agnes Witkowski said. Silvia Lopez Chavez looks to connect community across disciplines and cultural boundaries. PITTSFIELD, Mass. — The large mural taking shape on the Shipton Building on North Street is the work of Silvia Lopez Chavez. The artist was commissioned through the Let It Shine! Public Art Partnership and is funded by a MassDevelopment Transformative Development Initiative Creative Catalyst Grant. The partnership will celebrate Chavez's mural along with four additional new murals on Saturday, Sept. 9, with a community celebration "Let It Shine! A Celebration of Public Art." PITTSFIELD, Mass. Berkshire County's five Cultural Districts are partnering again on an even more ambitious ArtWeek Berkshires 2023, to be held Oct.14-22. DALTON, Mass. — Following a lengthy and at times heated discussion, the Select Board voted in favor of relocating the town's polling station to the Senior Center as of March 5, 2024. The split decision to move it from the Community Recreation Association passed 3-2 following remarks made by residents, the police chief, the town clerk, and board members, and against the recommendation of an ad hoc committee to stay at the CRA for now. During the annual town meeting, residents voted to have the town clerk and safety officials assess possible voting locations and present their findings to the board at the end of 120 days. PITTSFIELD, Mass. — The city will not resume mosquito spraying.
The City Council 5-6 shot down a request to repeal the 2021 decision that discontinued the adulticide spraying portion of the Berkshire County Mosquito Control Project.
The body was divided with Ward 2 Councilor Charles Kronick, Ward 6 Councilor Dina Lampiasi, Ward 7 Councilor Anthony Maffucio and Councilors at Large Peter White, Karen Kalinowsy and Earl Persip III, Councilor voting against the restoration of spraying. PITTSFIELD, Mass. — Westside Legends is hosting our 2nd Annual Westside Super Soap Box Derby on Saturday, Aug. 19 from noon to 4 pm. There will be a rain date on Sunday, Aug. 20. Check-in starts at 11 am and the first race starts, which features the city's mayoral candidates, at noon. PITTSFIELD, Mass. — City officials would like to see all of Pittsfield on metered water.
On Monday, the Public Works and Utilities subcommittee mulled how to best approach the endeavor. This was in response to a petition from Ward 1 Councilor Kenneth Warren and Ward 5 Councilor Patrick Kavey requesting a plan to offer qualifying homeowners water meters at little or no cost to them.
Councilor at Large Karen Kalinowsky has also advocated for water meters to lower costs for seniors on a fixed income. With this system, residents are charged on the volume of municipal water used in the household.
