Paronto Pitches Pittsfield Past Connecticut Champs

NORTH PROVIDENCE, R.I. -- Connor Paronto struck out eight and allowed just two hits and no earned runs for the Pittsfield Babe Ruth 14-year-old All-Stars in a 12-1 win over Waterford, Conn., on Thursday morning at the New England Championship.   Paronto announced his presence in the bottom of the first with his team on top, 1-0.   The Connecticut state champions used a single, a walk and an error to load the bases with two out, and Paronto got the next hitter on three straight strikes to end the inning.   He went on to strand runners at the corners in the third inning with a fly ball to Brendan Socie, and he left two on in the fifth with an inning-ending groundout to first

Pittsfield Man Arrested in Shooting Incident

PITTSFIELD, Mass. — A Pittsfield man is under arrest after allegedly discharging a firearm inside a vehicle.    Ryan Starbird, 19, was injured in the incident along with another Pittsfield man who was in the vehicle with him. Both are currently being treated at Berkshire Medical Center for gunshot injuries.    Police were dispatched to the Walmart parking lot in Berkshire Crossing around 2 a.m. on Thursday when a caller reported two people had been shot. Police did not disclose whether the caller was one of the injured or the name of the other adult.    Officers provided medical aid to both men at the scene.   Investigators located one shell casing

PITTSFIELD, Mass. — A community forum will take another look into the proposed changes for slowing traffic on West Street.   The public meeting will be held in the Crosby Elementary School auditorium, 517 West St., on Monday, July 24, at 6 p.m. It is being hosted by he city's Department of Public Services, the Pittsfield Community Design Center and City Councilor Dina Lampiasi.   An overview of the proposed changes for traffic-calming measures for West Street between Valentine Road and Government Drive will be provided. Hammill Hammers 4 Hits as Pittsfield Babe Ruth 14s Win Regional Opener

NORTH PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Andrew Hammill went 4-for-5 with a pair of doubles and seven RBIs Wednesday to lead the Pittsfield Babe Ruth 14-year-old All-Stars to a 20-8 win over Maine champion Tri-County in the New England Championships.   Pittsfield put the game away with a six-run top of the sixth inning to make a winner of Cam Hillard, who allowed five earned runs in 3 and two-thirds innings on the mound.   Noah Arnold finished up on the hill, allowing one earned run in 2 and a third innings.   Jackson Almeida, Eddie Ferris and Connor Paronto each had three hits in a 23-hit attack for Pittsfield, which went through five Tri-County pitchers.   Pittsfield (1-0)

Jimmy Bernardo Memorial Ride Set Aug. 5

PITTSFIELD, Mass. — Berkshire County Kids' Place and Violence Prevention Center hosts the 28th Annual Jimmy's Ride on Saturday, Aug. 5.    The ride starts at Kids' Place, 63 Wendell Ave., with registration at 8:30 a.m. and kickstands going up at 11. Pittsfield Parks Commission OKs Summer, Fall Events

PITTSFIELD, Mass. — The Parks Commission on Tuesday night OK'd a number of summer and fall events on city recreation properties.

After a lightning strike started a fire in the steeple at Price Memorial AME Zion Church last month, the panel voted to allow the congregation to use the Westside Riverway Park for worship services on Sundays until Sept. 10 from 9 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.

Park, Open Space and Natural Resource Program Manager James McGrath explained that the church almost immediately reached out to the city asking to use the space and he worked with the chairman to get approvals in place.

Dalton Approves Warren Farm Solar Easement

DALTON, Mass. — The easement for Warren Farm Solar LLC was approved during the Select Board meeting Monday night.    Citizens Energy, a non-profit energy company, is planning a 13-acre solar farm off Bridle Road.    An easement was agreed upon following several negotiations between the town and Citizens Energy's lawyers, Town Manager Tom Hutcheson said. Northampton Fire Chief Named State Fire Marshal

Chief Jon M. Davine BOSTON — Northampton Fire Chief Jon M. Davine, who has nearly 25 years of experience as a firefighter, has been selected as the next state fire marshal.   By statute, the authority for selecting the state fire marshal rests with the eight-member Fire Service Commission. Davine, who has been chief of Northampton Fire Rescue since 2020, was selected by the commission at its June 15 meeting and will assume his new position on July 31.    He succeeds outgoing State Fire Marshal Peter J.
