Firewall Glitch Caused Mass 911 Disruption

MILFORD, Mass. — State officials say a firewall on the 911 emergency system prevented calls from getting through on Tuesday, disrupting the system for a couple hours.   The interruptions started at about 1:15 p.m. on Tuesday when the State 911 Department became aware of the situation. The disruption lasted approximately two hours until operation was fully restored at 3:15 p.m.   Although some calls may not have gone through, the system allows dispatch centers to identify the phone number of callers and return those calls, according to a statement from the department. CHESHIRE, Mass. -- Will Grega struck out 13 in a perfect game on the mound Sunday to lead the Berkshire Bandits to a 3-0 win over the North County Kraken in a first-place battle in the Berkshire Adult Baseball League.   The Bandits (5-1) took over sole possession of first place in the league's 20-and-over division over the Kracken (4-1) with the win.   Grega helped his cause by going 1-for-3 with an RBI double and scoring a run on offense.   Demitri Ayers was 1-for-1 with a pair of walks and a runs scored, and Abdiel Cotto singled and scored a run in the win.   Jacob Hall took the loss on the mound for the Kraken with a complete-game effort, striking out eight and

BCHS Presents 'Sailing Towards My Father'

PITTSFIELD, Mass. — On Wednesday, June 26, the Berkshire County Historical Society will present "Sailing Towards My Father," a one-man play about Herman Melville performed by Stephen Collins and written and directed by Carl A. Rossi.
The play chronicles Melville's life from youth to old age, concentrating on his evolution as a writer and his complex relationship with God; his parents and siblings; his wife and children; and Nathaniel Hawthorne. The performance takes place at Herman Melville's historic home Arrowhead at 5:30 pm. Tickets are available by using the BOOK NOW button at berkshirehistory.org; $15 BCHS Members, $20 non-members.

Affordable Housing Projects Funding Available in Pittsfield

PITTSFIELD, Mass. — The City of Pittsfield's Affordable Housing Trust (AHT) is seeking applications for American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA) funds that have been allocated to the Trust for the purpose of creating affordable housing opportunities for Pittsfield residents.
The AHT has $500,000 in ARPA funding that it is seeking to award to affordable housing projects in Pittsfield that are eligible based upon the requirements.
The application process is a two-part process. Interested parties should submit a letter of interest to the Board to be reviewed at a meeting of the Trust. The initial review will determine the project's eligibility. If the Board determines the project is

Berkshire County Awarded Fair Share Funds

BOSTON — The Healey-Driscoll administration announced that it is delivering more than $13 million for 14 projects to support local transportation infrastructure and other needs.    The awards come from revenue generated by the Fair Share Amendment and are matching funds for projects and initiatives eligible for federal discretionary grants offered by the U.S. Department of Transportation.    In Berkshire County, the Berkshire Regional Planning Commission will receive $49,649 to develop a safety action plan. Safety action plans use a data-based approach to improve roadway safety for all users.     These matching funds are part of a total of $476.5

'Summer of Water Safety' Includes Lifeguards at Onota Lake

PITTSFIELD, Mass. — The District Attorney's Office kicked off a "summer of water safety" at Onota Lake during Tuesday's high temperatures.

At the same time, the city announced that lifeguards will return to the well-loved swimming spot.

"Today's weather cannot be any more suited for why we're gathered here today," DA Timothy Shugrue said. "On days like these, families, summer campers, boaters, and adults will most likely head to one of the beautiful Berkshires lakes to cool off."

Lanesborough Has Hot, Quiet Election Day

Voting was slow but steady at Lanesborough Town Hall. LANESBOROUGH, Mass. — The town had a steady and sweltering election day that saw Deborah Maynard elected to the Select Board.    Maynard outpolled Joseph Trybus 181-87 to fill the seat left vacant by longtime board member John Goerlach.   About halfway through polling hours, about 150 people had turned out in the 90-degree weather to cast votes for the Select Board, Finance Committee, Planning Board, library trustee, and town moderator. Pittsfield Girls Softball to Host New England Regional

PITTSFIELD, Mass. – Pittsfield Girls Softball will host the New England Babe Ruth Regional Tournament at the Doyle Softball Complex from June 28 to June 30.   The tournament will feature 15 teams, including the Berkshire Force 12-and-under and 14-and-under travel squads. Update: Sumner Sentenced To Life In Prison

On Monday, June 17, Tyler Sumner was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole for one count of murder in the first degree.
For one count of possession of ammunition without FID card, the defendant was sentenced to two years in the House of Corrections to be served concurrent with the one count of murder in the first degree.
