DALTON, Mass. — The town is on the hunt for volunteers to serve on the Police Building Committee. The Select Board established the committee during its meeting on Monday night and emphasized the need for volunteers to serve on it. Board Chair Robert Bishop requested media outlets help spread the word that the town is urgently seeking committee members. The committee of five members will explore potential new locations for the police department, as the current one, in the basement of the Town Hall, is not sustainable. PITTSFIELD, Mass. — Superintendent Joseph Curtis insists that the district's $200,000 budget cut will not reduce additional positions. "We all feel strongly, and I'm sure that the [School Committee] does as well, that we will not reduce any additional staff members as a result of that $200,000 reduction," he said on Wednesday. The day before, a $216 million city budget was passed that included a last-minute reduction to the schools. Update on June 14, 2024 at 4:15 pm: According to the District Attorney's Office, Jeremy Stanton, age 38 of Pittsfield, was charged with murder on June 12, 2024. Stanton allegedly murdered Ryan P. Babcock on June 11. Stanton was arrested on the evening of June 12 in a home in Worthington on unrelated outstanding warrants for violation of probation and assault with a dangerous weapon (knife) and vandalizing property from an incident on June 2. The defense entered a plea of not guilty. The defendant is being held without the right bail. PITTSFIELD, Mass. — MassDevelopment and Mass Cultural Council announced the award of a $6,159,900 investment into 88 nonprofit and municipal cultural organizations through the Cultural Facilities Fund (CFF), which the two agencies jointly administer. Berkshire County awardees include: Barrington Stage was awarded $112,000 to install updated theatrical lighting and audio equipment for the St. Germain Stage at the Sydelle and Lee Blatt Performing Arts Center.  PITTSFIELD, Mass. — The city is toter-lly ready for a new trash system. Call it a victory for Mayor Peter Marchetti, who was able push through in six months a new waste pickup model that had eluded his predecessors. The City Council approved draft five-year contracts with Casella Waste Management on Tuesday, moving Pittsfield from unlimited curbside collection to automated collection with 48-gallon toters for trash and recycling.
Recycling will begin on Sept. 13 and trash routes will start on Oct. 18 with toters provided at no cost to residents. Officials predict this will trim the trash budget by about $600,000 to $4.6 million, with $80,000 in savings embedded in the

The public may be aware that I spear-headed local legislation in Pittsfield and Lenox banning the sale of puppies from puppy mills at pet stores. Berkshire Voters for Animals and the Massachusetts Humane Society were strong advocates and helped immensely.
I have received an email from Berkshire Voters for Animals stating, "There is still one of our bills in its original committee that needs to be released by June 14th or it will not have a chance to be passed this session. Time is running out for Massachusetts lawmakers to advance legislation that will prevent commercial dog breeders (puppy mills) from trucking cruelly bred puppies into pet shops. New York, Maryland
