 STOW — Massachusetts fire officials are reminding residents to check their smoke and carbon monoxide (CO) alarms when they change their clocks. "Working smoke and CO alarms are crucial home safety tools," said State Fire Marshal Peter J. Ostroskey. "As we 'spring forward' this weekend, remember to check your alarms when you change your clocks. Unless you have newer alarms with sealed, long-life batteries, this is a good time to replace the alkaline batteries in your smoke and carbon monoxide alarms or replace the device if it's more than 10 years old." PITTSFIELD, Mass.— The School Committee has unanimously voted to adopt a safe firearm storage resolution as an effort to shield its students and staff from gun violence.
The resolution warrants communications to parents, guardians, and students on the importance of secure firearm storage as soon as possible, distributed to each school at least once annually, and included in the district website and student registration materials.
Additionally, it directs the superintendent to update the student handbooks with this information to continue work with local law enforcement, health agencies, and nonprofit organizations on the effort.

PITTSFIELD, Mass. — On Friday, March 10 in Berkshire Superior Court Joshua Lofink was found guilty on all counts: 2 counts of Mayhem; 2 counts of Assault and Battery by Means of a Dangerous Weapon causing Serious Bodily Injury with a knife; and 2 counts of Vandalism, slashing tires on a car. Lofink, a resident of Pittsfield in his late 30s, has a criminal history in Massachusetts, Connecticut and California. Sentencing will take place on Tuesday, March 14.  PITTSFIELD, Mass. — City councilors may put the North Street ballot question to rest this Tuesday.
After weeks of confusion, the council at its last meeting voted against sending the question to City Clerk Michele Benjamin and Councilor at Large Pete White motioned to table with the intent to rescind in two weeks.
On Thursday, White confirmed that he still intends to motion to rescind this week.
Early this year, Councilor at Large Karen Kalinowsky put forward a petition to allow voters to decide if North Street should be two lanes with bike lanes or a four-lane way without. She has spoken against the bike lanes since being elected.

BOSTON — Radhika Uppaluri, a former programmer and systems supervisor for the state Executive Office of Education (EOE), has paid a $70,000 civil penalty for violating the conflict of interest law by, as an EOE employee, hiring and supervising information technology (IT) consultants recruited by her family's company. Uppaluri signed a Disposition Agreement in which she admitted to the violations and waived her right to a hearing. While at EOE, Uppaluri also held positions in her family's company, Shri Radhe Krishna Corporation (SRK).  PITTSFIELD, Mass. — A tradition was revived from pre-pandemic times on Thursday as members of the Fire Department were recognized for moving up the ladder.
Three captains and five lieutenants were pinned by friends and loved ones during a ceremony at Taconic High School. A new badge was placed on the men's class A Uniforms.
"It’s important to know that all of you have earned these promotions," Chief Thomas Sammons said. "You put the time in and made it happen. You should be proud."
The pinning ceremony has not happened since 2019 due to the pandemic. Many of the first-responders have been in their new positions for some time but the department wanted

BOSTON — The Federal Emergency Management Agency will be sending almost $1.4 million to the Commonwealth of Massachusetts to reimburse it for the cost of purchasing emergency supplies during the COVID-19 pandemic. The $1,377,794 Public Assistance grant will reimburse the Massachusetts Department of Public Health for the cost of personal protective equipment (PPE) and supplies purchased to address COVID-19.
