With Pittsfield still in the highest incidence rate for COVID-19 transmission, the Board of Health addressed a possible nationwide decision that the virus is no longer an emergency. In late January, President Joseph Biden announced an intent to end national and public health emergency declarations in May. This could reportedly affect insurance coverage of tests, vaccines, and treatments. DPU Approves Further Reductions to Winter Gas Supply Rates 11:28AM / Sunday, March 05, 2023 | | BOSTON — The Massachusetts Department of Public Utilities (DPU) announced it has approved additional reductions in gas supply rates for Eversource Gas of Massachusetts and Boston Gas Company d/b/a National Grid gas customers. On average, the decreases will result in a monthly bill decrease of about 10 percent for a typical residential heating customer. Eversource serves approximately 300,000 customers, and National Grid serves approximately 950,000 customers. Beginning on March 1, 2023, customers served by the companies can expect lower gas supply rates, which last until May 1. PITTSFIELD, Mass. — With a new shelter on the horizon, the Homelessness Advisory Committee wants to address the issue of pet ownership in temporary housing. On Wednesday, the panel decided to create a subcommittee to brainstorm solutions for unhoused residents with furry friends. "One of the barriers to sheltering folks, not just housing them but even sheltering folks, are pets," Chair Kim Borden said. MDAR Receives Funds to Increase Seniors' Access to Locally Grown Produce02:16PM / Saturday, March 04, 2023 | | BOSTON — The Massachusetts Department of Agricultural Resources (MDAR) announced today that Massachusetts has been awarded $1,410,222 to expand the Senior Farmers Market Nutrition Program (FMNP). The award was granted by the United States Department of Agriculture's (USDA) Food and Nutrition Service from American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA) funds. The $1.4 million grant award will allow MDAR to increase the level of benefit for seniors participating in the SFMNP from $25 to $50. PITTSFIELD, Mass. — Hoping to save lives from opioid overdose, Berkshire Harm Reduction is bringing Narcan to the streets. Program Manager Sarah DeJesus updated the Board of Health on Wednesday on the organization's efforts to place Narcan or Naloxone boxes in public places that are readily available for use. The medicine, which is administered nasally, blocks opiate receptors in the nervous system.
