BOSTON — The Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection (MassDEP) has penalized 182 MTR, LLC, owner of Highway Auto Salvage, Inc. in Northampton, $7,470 for failure to dispose of septage in accordance with the requirements of the Commonwealth's wastewater regulations. Evidence of the septage disposal violation was observed on Dec. 31, 2021, by MassDEP when responding to a complaint alleging that an employee of Highway Auto Salvage had pumped the contents of a septic tank from the onsite sewage disposal system to an area adjacent to the Mill River in violation of the Commonwealth's groundwater discharge regulations.  PITTSFIELD, Mass. — Berkshire County business and organizations joining forces with Pittsfield's Office of Cultural Development to host the 12th annual 10x10 Festival. Beginning Thursday and running through Sunday, Feb. 26 festivalgoers have the opportunity to choose from more than 50 events to celebrate the winter season. BOSTON — The Massachusetts Registry of Motor Vehicles (RMV) announced a system replacement with its "Request a Crash Report" pagelet on its website and therefore this specific customer online transaction will be unavailable between 5 p.m. on Sunday, Feb. 5, and approximately 9 a.m. on Tuesday, Feb. 21. During this system replacement, any customers who are in urgent need of a copy of a crash report, may contact the local or state law enforcement agency where their crash occurred.  PITTSFIELD, Mass. — The community is rallying around a local artist in need of a heart transplant with a Valentine's Day fundraiser.
On Tuesday, the "Give a Heart" event to benefit Mike Carty will run from 5 to midnight at Methuselah Bar and Lounge on North Street. It will include live music, raffles, and mayoral candidates Peter Marchetti and John Krol as guest bartenders.
"We're going to be using the hashtag #giveaheart, it's to raise funds for Mike Carty, who needs a heart transplant,” bartender Amanda Marcisz explained.

DALTON, Mass. — The Finance Committee voted to recommend a number of fiscal 2024 department and office budgets during its meeting on Wednesday night. One of the smallest increases may be for the town moderator, a line item projected to increase 2.09 percent, or $9. That $9 will bring the moderator's pay to $439 with another $100 for training, travel and lodging and dues and memberships for a total budget of $539. Chair William Drosehn questioned whether the raise is large enough based on to the amount of work the position has but the committee held off on any further raises because of the uncertainty of the town's budget at this point. On Tuesday, the new Social Emotional Learning and Safety subcommittee referred a presentation and resolution on secure gun storage by the national Be Smart for Kids advocacy group to the full committee.
