PITTSFIELD, Mass. — Berkshire Regional Transit Authority service changes for the upcoming fiscal year were approved at Thursday's advisory board meeting. A number of adjustments were made to the proposal after seeking input from the Berkshire Regional Planning Commission and the general public. The planning commission wanted to ensure that the changes do not impact the environmental justice population and continue to connect residents to essential locations. Per BRPC's recommendations, there are no longer routing changes along East and Newell Streets and micro-transit pilot program fares will be between $3 and $4 per person for a one-way trip. The scholarship fund was established in 2017 to honor Julia Bowen, BArT's founding executive director. The scholarship was created by and is managed by the BART Foundation to provide financial assistance to select BArT alumni through their college career. PITTSFIELD, Mass. — Bird scooters landed in Pittsfield this week and iBerkshires took a ride on one to see what they are all about. Pittsfield is partnering with micro-mobility company Bird to provide a fleet of electric scooters that can be rented by the ride. It is at no cost to the city and the company has agreed to hold all liability. Pittsfield's only job is to provide messaging, education, and preparation for the fleet. According to the city's Facebook page, the scooters arrived on Wednesday and were placed in a few places in the North Street vicinity. Renting a scooter starts with downloading the free Bird app, which then shows a map of where the nearest ones are

Water mains throughout the city will be flushed through hydrants over the next three weeks to remove accumulations of pipeline corrosion products. LANESBOROUGH, Mass. — The U.S. Department of Agriculture and several state agencies are working to contain an avian influenza outbreak in Berkshire County after samples from a 240-bird flock in Lanesborough were confirmed to have the virus in late March. The non-commercial flock contained ducks, chicken, geese, quail, and turkeys, all of which are capable of getting sick with and spreading "highly pathogenic avian influenza," or HPAI. The state and the USDA euthanized the flock and quarantined the area to prevent further spread. Local officials declined to identify the location of the flock and referred to inquiries to the state.
