Local Athletes Earn League Honors with College Teams

Lee High School graduate Elizabeth Brown was named to the all-Massachusetts State College Athletic Conference first team this fall.   Brown, a sophomore at MCLA, led the Trailblazers in digs, with 3.27 per set, and was third on the team in kills with 2.29 per set.   She played in all 26 of MCLA's matches, starting 25, and had a season-high 18 kills in a five-set loss to Westfield State.   Brown was named second-team all-league last fall after her first season at MCLA.   Her former Lee teammate and current MCLA teammate appeared in 15 matches for MCLA (21-5) in her first year on the squad. Roads Near BCC to Host Thankful 5K Thanksgiving Morning

Adams-Cheshire, Lee Win Youth Football Titles

Dalton CRA Marks 100 With Week of Activities

DALTON, Mass. — For the last century, the Dalton CRA has been trying to make lives healthier and better for town residents.   But just in case it missed anyone, the venerable recreation center is throwing open its doors next Thursday as part of a weeklong celebration of the CRA's 100th anniversary.   The CRA has been marking its centennial all year, and the culmination of those festivities comes Nov. 6-10.   One big highlight: free use of the facility from 5 a.m. to 8 p.m. on Thursday, Nov. 9. NORTH ADAMS, Mass. -- The Championship matchups are set for the Northern Berkshire Sports Academy's fall basketball season.   The title games are set for Sunday morning at Drury High School.   In the A Division, the NBSA will play Giardina and Bresett PC at 9 a.m. Then, the Saboteurs will take on Adelson and Company in the B Division final.   All four teams advanced with semi-final wins on Oct. 29 at the Armory.   Jon Gregory scored 31 points to lead Adelson and Company. Drury's McGrath Leads Springfield College Offense

Drury High graduate Kayla McGrath has a team-high eight goals for the Springfield College women's soccer team this fall.   Last week, she scored both Pride goals in a 2-0 win over Wellesley.   McGrath's two game-winning goals this season is currently seventh in the New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference.   She has played 29 games and has 10 starts over the last two seasons for Springfield, which was 8-4-5 overall (6-2-3 in the NEWMAC) in the regular season and opens the conference tournament on Tuesday against Smith.   Westfield State senior (Wahconah) has appeared in three games with one start in goal for the Owls, stopping six shots while

Pittsfield Council Gives Baseball a Birthday

PITTSFIELD, Mass. — Baseball now has a birthday in the city of Pittsfield.

On Tuesday, the City Council unanimously voted to recognize Sept. 5 as the official birthday of baseball.  The effort was led by Ward 5 Councilor Patrick Kavey and baseball enthusiast Phil Massery.

Kavey thanked Mayor Linda Tyer for supporting the effort.  She submitted a resolution for the council's approval at the meeting.

"We look forward to working with you over the next couple of months and the incoming mayor to really make the next fifth of September something something really awesome and something we can all be proud of with with our history of baseball," he said.

Memorial Plaque Unveiled at Pittsfield's Buddy Pellerin Field

PITTSFIELD, Mass. — A local baseball legend is now immortalized at Clapp Park with a plaque marking his memorial field.

Family, friends, and trainees of George "Buddy" Pellerin gathered at the West Housatonic Street ballfield on Saturday for the unveiling.

Parks Commissioner and former player Cliff Nilan said there wasn't a day when Pellerin didn't give coaching a thought. He joked that if they passed kids playing baseball on the side of the road, the late coach would drop everything and teach them how to throw.
