Pittsfield Public Schools Honors Outstanding CTE Students

See more photos here.  PITTSFIELD, Mass. — The Pittsfield Public Schools celebrated its Career and Technical Education students last month, awarding 14 outstanding students for their efforts in the program.    The CTE program had 81 graduates this year and 53 of the juniors and seniors made approximately $815,360 in earned wages while completing 50,960 co-op hours. Pittsfield Health Board Considers Fine-Tuning Tobacco Rules

PITTSFIELD, Mass. — The Board of Health is looking into fine-tuning the city's tobacco product regulations.

Tri-Town Health Department Director James Wilusz recommended various amendments to the city's tobacco ordinance at the board's June meeting. The two main suggestions address products that slip through the state's bans and "smoking bars."

The department has been administering a tobacco awareness program since 1994.

"Pittsfield is still very high in smoking prevalence and smoking during pregnancy, it came down a little bit pre-pandemic, I think because of the local policy efforts, but I think coming out of the pandemic, we expect it to go

Lenox Valedictorian Says Class of 2022 Has Star Power

LENOX, Mass. — Lenox Memorial High School valedictorian Piper Maxymillian said the class of 2022 has star power.

"That intangible quality we have when we are our best selves and when we help others be their best selves. The positive force that lives inside us all," she said. "I can safely say, class of 2022, that we have star power. From our 33 seniors graduating summa cum laude, to the involvement of Active Minds, we have all worked to better our school."

Maxymillian and the 65 other members of the class of 2022 were honored at the school's graduation at Tanglewood.

Pittsfield Con Comm Ratifies Two Emergency Work Permits

PITTSFIELD, Mass. — The Conservation Commission ratified two emergency permits for infrastructure work subject to the Wetlands Protection Act on Thursday.

Erosion damage had to be repaired on the roadway shoulder of Dan Casey Memorial Drive and a blocked culvert needed to be addressed on East New Lenox Road. The two projects were completed by June 1.
   
Both required a WPA emergency certification form through the Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection with the Pittsfield Highway Department as the applicant.

BOSTON — The Massachusetts Department of Transportation (MassDOT), Massachusetts Executive Office of Public Safety and Security (EOPSS), Massachusetts State Police (MSP), law enforcement and transportation partners hosted a safety event today due to an alarming rise in roadway fatalities.   Roadway fatalities in Massachusetts and across the nation increased in calendar year 2021, a year when traffic volume was still not at levels seen before the pandemic.  In 2021, Massachusetts had more than 400 roadway deaths—the highest amount in more than 11 years and 22 percent higher than in 2020. The Consumer Price Index (CPI) surged in May 2022 as gas prices continued to run higher. These results came as a downside surprise to a stock market that has been falling most of the week.   Friday's CPI number for May 2022 reflected an increase of 1 percent, compared to "hot" estimates of 0.3 percent in April 2022. On a year-over-year basis, the gain was 8.6 percent, which is a 40-year high in the CPI. Gasoline prices were a key driver of inflation last month, although Owners' Equivalent Rent (OER), which accounts for about a third of the CPI, also gained.
